Adding or Taking Dirt Away

Lately, I've noticed that this one road near me was closed off as they are wanting to widen it and cut it down.

I couldn't help but be reminded of when they did that in my community. The hill in front of me was too high so they cut some of it down and then went straight ahead and poured foundation down for the houses built there.

My house is at the bottom of the hill and so they did not remove any dirt at all, nor did they add any either for that matter.

Every house that had dirt moved or added to, had foundation issues. Each one had to have their foundations repaired. To date, my foundation has been fine.

So when I saw this road being cut away and the hill lowered, I couldn't help but think that they would then experience shifts and that means potholes and cracks and all that fun stuff and it means, they will be repairing that road for a long time before the dirt settles down.

It was another reminder to me for when I go to purchase my land and if I have the house built for me, to make sure the land is not needing to be disturbed, at least not much so that I won't have to worry about the foundation.

Here are ways I found on the internet that you can damage your foundation:

And also, to back up what I wrote, here is also other ways that your foundation can have issues and to note, the clay soil shifting....that is the type of soil we have here where I am at, clay soil.

All things to remember and think about when purchasing/building a home and then, maintaining it! :)
